In 2024, Kaukauna Utilities started a comprehensive fire hydrant painting program to refurbish existing fire hydrants and provide better visibility to the Fire Department. This process involves removal of existing paint, application of protective primers, and repainting with a high-quality coating. You may notice several different colors (yellow and gray) during the painting process but please note that the final color of each hydrant will follow the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines based on water flow capacity, as identified in the table below. Based upon the classifications below, approximately 90% of the hydrants in the city will be painted green.
Water Flow Capacity (Gallons Per Minute – GPM) | Color |
500-999 GPM | Orange |
1000-1499 GPM | Green |
1500 GPM & above | Blue |
In 2025, hydrants will be painted in neighborhoods north and south of CE – see map here. This project will continue in the coming years with approximately 10% (~100) of hydrants being painted each year.
As a reminder, residents are not permitted to paint or maintain fire hydrants. If you have any questions, please contact us directly at 920-858-9180.
